Andrew “Andy” Joseph Stevens

1942 – 2025

It is with sadness that the family announces the passing of Andy Stevens, aged 82, on July 25th, 2025, at Portage General Hospital. He was a beloved son, brother, uncle, and friend who will be mourned.

Andy grew up in Portage la Prairie and remained in Portage his whole life. Growing up, Andy didn’t care for schoolwork and dropped out of school early in favour of general labour. His jobs included working for Mayfair Glassware, Co-op Bakery, Parrheim Foods, and Nutri-Pea.

For many years Andy enjoyed regularly vacationing at the Calgary Stampede. Nevertheless, he always managed to find time to take his parents trailering every summer as well. They visited Cypress Hills, Saskatchewan, the Black Hills in South Dakota, and his sister and family in southern Ontario among other destinations. He was a very good driver.

After his parents passed away, he lived with his friend Les. In recent years, Andy had a serious battle with cancer. He underwent intense treatment and was able to pull through thanks to the wonderful care he received at Portage General Hospital and from Les at home.

Andy loved to talk and laugh. He had a wheezy high-pitched laugh and easy-going manner that endeared him to many. Before age began to take its toll, it seemed like Andy was friends with everyone in Portage and beyond. He was kind, gentle and patient. An animal lover, he doted on his pet cats. He will be missed.

Andy was predeceased by his parents Cliff & Ena, sister Norma (Herb), brother Don (Lynne), and long-time friend Les. He is survived by his niece Tara (Finn) and their children.

Andy wished to be buried with his parents at Hillside Cemetery. A private burial took place on Tuesday, July 29th in accordance with his wishes.

In lieu of flowers, the family requests that donations be made to Portage District General Hospital Foundation 524 5th St SE, Portage la Prairie, MB, R1N 3A8.
