A 29-year-old man was sentenced to six months in jail for an attempted robbery during a recent appearance in Moose Jaw Provincial Court.

Prince Lamadine pleaded guilty to assault with intent to steal and failing to comply with a probation order. The six-month sentence was a joint submission from legal aid lawyer Suzanne Lalonde and Crown prosecutor Stephen Wishart.

On July 7, Lamadine attacked the victim in a mall parking lot and attempted to grab the victim’s backpack. Wishart said in the statement of facts that the victim had to use physical force to protect their property.

At the time, Lamadine was mere days away from completing a 12-month probation order that began on July 12, 2023. One of the conditions of the order was to keep the peace and be of good behaviour.

Lamadine spent 23 actual days in custody prior to sentencing and was credited for 35 days, leaving him with 145 days left to serve.

He will also be on probation for 12 months following his jail sentence. Conditions include keeping the peace and being of good behaviour, reporting to a probation officer within two working days of release, having no contact with the victim, not possessing weapons, attending appointments with medical professionals, and taking medication as prescribed.

Lalonde told the court that Lamadine had been diagnosed with schizophrenia and a heart condition, but is willing to accept treatment for his mental health.

Judge David Chow accepted the joint submission and strongly encouraged Lamadine to continue with his medication, based on previous experience with the man.

“I know when Mr. Lamadine is properly medicated, he is a totally different individual,” Chow said.

Chow also imposed a mandatory DNA order and a firearms prohibition.
