The trial for former Swift Current U18 hockey player Mason Strutt will be heard in Moose Jaw’s Court of King’s Bench by a judge and jury.
Defense lawyer Kathryn Gilliss appeared in Moose Jaw Provincial Court on Tuesday via telephone on Strutt’s behalf. It was noted during the proceedings that Gilliss and Strutt submitted the election of the Court of King’s Bench by judge and jury in a written submission to the courts on Monday.
Strutt is facing one count of sexual assault in Moose Jaw. He is also facing several charges in Regina, including uttering threats, assault, animal cruelty, and causing a person to take a noxious substance.
While the case didn’t qualify for a preliminary hearing, a pre-trial conference has been scheduled for Sept. 12.
Originally from Estevan, Strutt played three seasons of minor hockey in Swift Current.
He later went on to play junior hockey for the Estevan Bruins.
