Two Winnipeg sisters are turning lemonade into hope for people affected by cancer.
For the past two years, Erika and Carly Wedlake have hosted a lemonade stand at Sandy Hook RV park to raise funds for CancerCare Manitoba.
"It started when we had a family member named Jack, and he died from cancer, and we wanted to do something," said Erika. "So we started a little lemonade stand and went through CancerCare Manitoba, got stuff and did that for the past few years."
Each year, the girls aged 7 and 11 set up at the front of the RV Park near Winnipeg Beach, where they offer crocheted lemons and free lemonade in exchange for a donation.
"This year, we have these cute little happy face lemons for $25. We have made about 30 already," said Erika. "Last year we had just these flat lemons, so having like an actual 3D plush is much cuter."
Leading up to their sale at the RV park, the girls also held a special sale at the RBC Convention Centre, raising over $1,700.
Carly says she is thankful to be a part of this lemonade stand each year.
"It's really fun to do it and it's nice to give people things and help them," Carly explained. "It feels good to give back."
Grace Wedlake, mother of Erika and Carly, says it makes her proud to see her girls getting involved.
"As they grow, they gain more confidence and more experience for this event. It's not just a lemonade stand itself, it's also the reflection of compassion and determination for them to make a difference for our community," said Grace. "I'm very, very proud of these two young leaders of the next generation to make a difference for our community."
