International Owl Awareness Day is Monday, and the Saskatchewan Burrowing Owl Interpretive Centre is celebrating with four days of events.
There will be treats, magic shows, face painting, gift draws and more.
And, of course, visitors can come out and see the owls.
“At this time, we have 12 adult burrowing owls and 17 new babies, as well as a resident short-eared owl,” said Saskatchewan Burrowing Owl Interpretive Centre owl co-ordinator Lori Johnson.
There will also be a grand prize where one lucky person will get to name a baby owl. The name will be chosen for the “imprint owl” that travels around the province to teach people about burrowing owls.
Owl awareness is especially important for burrowing owls as they continue to be an endangered species.
“They were first listed so in 1997, and unfortunately their status remains unchanged. There is still ongoing work and stuff that needs to be done in order to ensure that these little owls are here for generations to come,” said Johnson.
The events will take place from 1 to 3 p.m. at the burrowing owl centre on Monday, Thursday, Friday and Saturday. The centre is closed Tuesday and Wednesday.
Admission is by donation. More information is available on the Saskatchewan Burrowing Owl Interpretive Centre’s website.
