Provincial cutting horse competition taking place at the Golden Mile Arena

The Saskatchewan Cutting Horse Association's provincial competition got underway on Friday at the Moose Jaw Exhibition Company's Golden Mile Arena.

The event showcases a horse and rider's ability to cut a calf out of the herd and keep the calf separated from the herd for a two-and-a-half minute time limit.

Competitors are then scored based on the horse's ability to keep the cow away from the herd and penalized if it needs help from the rider.

The event features classes from experienced open horses to youth riders to entry-level ranch cutting. Generally, over 100 cuts will take place over the course of the weekend.

The competition continues on Saturday and Sunday, and admission is free.
