Fr. Daniel Muyres, OSB

Fr. Daniel Albert Muyres, OSB, passed away on July 28, 2025, at Humboldt District Hospital, Humboldt, SK. He was 90 years of age. Fr. Daniel Muyres was born at St. Elizabeth Hospital in Humboldt, SK, on January 14,1935, to Frank and Albertina (nee Zimmerman) Muyres, and was the eldest of six children. He grew up on the family farm one-and-a-half miles northwest of St. Gregor and attended the old, one room St. Gregor School from 1941 to 1951, with Mr. Henry Murphy as his teacher for the entire ten years. Fr. Daniel took Grade 11 and 12 at St. Peter’s College and graduated in 1953. After completing his first-year university at St. Peter’s College he joined the Benedictine Order and entered the novitiate at St. Peter’s Abbey, Muenster, SK. In 1954 he went on to study at St. John’s Abbey, Collegeville, Minnesota from 1955-1961. Fr. Daniel was ordained to the priesthood by Bishop Francis Klein at St. Peter’s Cathedral, Muenster on June 10, 1961. He taught English, Latin and Science and helped with sports activities at St. Peter’s College from 1961 to 1964. He became assistant in the business office and continued to teach several subjects until 1967 and became the business manager at St. Peter’s Abbey, College, Press and Farm until 1989. During this time, he was also weekend assistant priest in Humboldt (1969-70) and Bruno (1970-71). He was pastor at St. Joseph’s, Fulda, from 1972 to 1974, then attended Saint Paul University, Ottawa, for a year to receive his master’s degree in Pastoral Studies – Counselling. He was pastor at St. Scholastica, Burr (1975-1986), Marysburg (1986-88) and LeRoy (1988-89). In 1989, after serving as business manager for twenty-two years, he became resident pastor in Watson and continued as pastor of LeRoy, and in 1995 the parish in Englefeld was added. Fr. Daniel was also the financial manager for the Diocese of Muenster from 1992-1998, when he became pastor of Pilger, Middle Lake and Fulda. In 2000, the Fulda parish was closed but he continued at Pilger and Middle Lake until 2004. In 2003, Fr. Daniel became the chaplain at St. Elizabeth Hospital in Humboldt and then the new Humboldt District Hospital until 2020. It was also at that time that he became pastor at St. Peter’s Parish in Muenster from 2004 to 2015. It was then that he retired, and continued grounds and yard work around the Abbey. He watched webinars and listened to spiritual talks on his computer. As his mobility and standing became increasingly difficult, Fr. Daniel moved to Quill Plains Lodge in Watson from November of 2023 until February of 2024 when he moved to St. Mary’s Villa in Humboldt, where he resided until his passing. Fr. Daniel is survived by the monastic community of St. Peter’s Abbey in Muenster; his sisters Yvonne (Nick) Schweighardt and Dolores (Frank) Steier; sister-in-law Patricia Lang and numerous nieces, nephews and cousins. He was predeceased by his parents, Frank and Albertina Muyres; brothers Richard (Agnes) Muyres and Kenneth Muyres; sister Sr. Jane Muyres, OSU and brother-in-law Frank Lang. The Prayer Service was offered at St. Peter’s Roman Catholic Cathedral, Muenster, on Monday August 4, 2025, at 7:30 pm., presided by Br. Basil Schaan, OSB. Others taking part were: Br. Benedict van Ginkel, OSB, and Fr. Cosmas Epifano, OSB, scripture readers; Christy Waldner, pianist; Sheryl Korte, organist. The Mass of the Resurrection was offered at St. Augustine Roman Catholic Church, Humboldt, on Tuesday, August 5, 2025, at 10:00 a.m., celebrated by Fr. Demetrius Wasylyniuk, OSB. Others taking part were: Steven Steier, cross bearer; Stephanie Zee and Valerie Fair, scripture readers; Dolores Steier, intentions; Yvonne and Nick Schweighardt, gift bearers; Maureen Beisel and Brenda Duerr, memorial table attendants. Pallbearers were Gerard Muyres, Eugene Muyres, Chris Steier, Kevin Lang, Michael Schweighardt and Mark Schweighardt. An Honor Guard was formed by members of the Knights of Columbus. Music ministry was the St. Augustine Parish Funeral Choir led by Loretta Schugmann, director, and Carol Esler, pianist. Interment followed at the St. Peter’s Abbey Cemetery in Muenster. Memorial donations may be directed to the St. Peter’s Abbey - Elder Care Fund.
