A Calgary driver was penalized under Alberta’s SafeRoads program after refusing roadside testing and being clocked at 152 kilometres per hour on Highway 2 southbound over the Heritage Day long weekend, according to RCMP.

Olds RCMP said in a Sunday Facebook post that the Immediate Roadside Sanctions included:

  • a 30-day vehicle seizure

  • a 90-day licence suspension

  • a $1,200 IRS fine

  • a $397 speeding ticket

The post credited “excellent teamwork by Didsbury and Olds RCMP for getting this dangerous driver off the road.”

The post also listed impaired driving penalties under Alberta’s SafeRoads program.

For drivers with a blood alcohol concentration between 0.05 and 0.08, the IRS:WARN penalty includes a $200 fine.

For drivers who exceed 0.08 or refuse roadside testing, the IRS:FAIL penalties include:

  • a $1,000 fine for a first offence ($2,000 for repeat offences)

  • a $200 victim surcharge for a first offence ($400 for repeat offences)

  • a 90-day licence suspension

  • a 30-day vehicle seizure

  • a mandatory ignition interlock program for repeat offences

  • the IMPACT education program, required on a second offence

“Driving impaired puts lives at risk — and comes with serious consequences,” RCMP added.
