The Carlyle Carinals managed to bring home a provincial trophy for the first time in the team's history over the weekend, winning the Senior 1 award on Sunday. They fought against a number of Saskatchewan teams, with some tough competition, but the team managed to take the weekend without a single loss.
Head Coach and player with the Cardinals, Brent McLean, says it was a great weekend with great games.
"In our first game, we played the Regina Rockies. We were able to win that one 3-2, which was a tight game all the way through. We had a great starting performance by Danny Rasmussen, who's played with us for years."
"Game two was another round-robin game against the Saskatoon Hoppers that we were able to win 8-4. Then in the semifinals, we played the Saskatoon Outlaws, which we were able to win 8-2."
"Then in the finals, we were in a really tight game against the Saskatoon Rockies again. They were up 1-0 basically from the second batter in, until we were able to break it open in the fifth inning, and we were actually able to mercy them in the sixth, 11-1."
The dominating performance is one for the Cardinals' history books, and McLean says that the experience was unreal.
"You know, I'm not sure I ever believed we would actually be able to win that tier, but we were able to pull it off somehow."
The team isn't done for the season, as they head to Westlock, Alberta, next weekend for a shot at the 2025 Westerns.
Their provincials win this year also qualifies them for the 2026 Westerns, which will be held in Saskatchewan.
McLean is unsure if the southeast has been named as a candidate for hosting those, with some considerations needing to be made for the event.
"It would have to be somebody who would typically go to that level of Provincials to host, I believe. I'm not really sure about the whole process. Personally, our diamonds may be a little bit too small for that level of baseball, but it would certainly be nice if it were closer to home than 10, 11 hours away."
McLean thanked all of the support from the parents and fans that they received over the winning weekend.
