A former drama student at the Swift Current Comprehensive High School is preparing to debut his latest production, coming up next week at the Lyric Theatre.
Homebodies, a historical fiction play that explores the past, present, and family ties, will be featured on August 13 and 14, with doors opening at 7:00 p.m. and shows beginning around 7:30 p.m.
Steele Prefontaine, the writer and producer of the production, shared that his brother, Slayte, will be directing the production.
"The play is set in 1945 in rural Saskatchewan, and it follows two brothers, the eldest brother, Ira and his younger brother, Harpo," he said. "Harpo is living with Ira and needs him as a full-time caretaker.
"Ira's a bit of a hoarder, they come to a head as Ira kind of pushes his brother too much and Harpo fights back, that's kind of where the dramatic tension lies."
Both evenings will include live music before the show begins, and tickets are $10 per person online or at the door.
"There's some mature content, but I think it's anything a kid with their parent could handle," said Prefontaine. "There's a little bit of violence and some coarse language."
The southwest playwright highlighted that he's also working on redrafting some of his older works.
"I remember seeing a play at the Lyric Theatre when I was younger, I don't remember the title of it now, but it was about the Cypress Hills Massacre," he added. "It had local talent, there were teachers in the play, a former teacher wrote it, and there were friends' dads in it.
"It was just really cool seeing people from the community get together and accomplish something big, that made a lasting impact on me, so it's really cool to do this on the same stage."
