While the QEII crash near Balzac caused traffic delays but no injuries, Calgary police responded to two separate fatal incidents elsewhere in Calgary on Heritage Day Monday, which left a two-year-old girl and a man dead in unrelated events.
In a Tuesday news release, Calgary Police Service said its Traffic Section is continuing to investigate the two separate fatal collisions that occurred in the city’s northwest and northeast.
The first collision occurred at approximately 1:40 p.m. on Stoney Trail N.W., underneath the Crowchild Trail N.W. overpass.
Police said a 2017 Kawasaki motorcycle, operated by a man in his 40s, was travelling southbound in the middle lane of Stoney Trail N.W. The roadway was under construction, with the middle and right lanes being prepared for re-paving.
According to the release,
“It is believed the motorcycle lost control when moving over to the left lane. The rider was dismounted from the motorcycle and suffered fatal injuries. The rider was declared deceased at the scene.”
Police said neither speed, alcohol, nor drugs are believed to be factors in the crash.
Later that evening, around 6:50 p.m., a second fatal incident occurred in the alleyway behind the 600 block of Taradale Drive N.E.
Police said a white truck, driven by a man in his 30s, was travelling west through the back alley when he made an immediate right turn to continue north, striking a two-year-old girl who was in the alleyway. The driver was uninjured and remained at the scene.
The girl was taken to hospital in life-threatening condition and died from her injuries.
Calgary police said alcohol and drugs are not believed to be factors in the incident.
“The circumstances that led to the collision are under investigation,” the release stated. “No further information is available at this time.”
Anyone who may have witnessed either collision or who has dashcam footage of these incidents is asked to contact police by calling 403-266-1234. Tips can also be submitted anonymously to Crime Stoppers.
