The RCMP will be moving to a new location in Nanton.

Currently, the RCMP detachment is at 2501 21 St, but will be moving to 1907 - 21 Ave, which happens to be the present location of the Town Office on Highway 2 South.

In a media release about the move, the Town and the Alberta RCMP state that this move will provide a strong, visible, and accessible police presence in Town.

The Town is leasing the RCMP the space the Town Administration is in for 20 years, but this move will not affect the Nanton Library.

The Town will now be green lighting planned phases of civic renovations on the west side of the Tom Hornecker Recreation Centre for the new Town Administration building.

By doing so, they will be utilizing some unused space, which the Town says has been languishing for numerous years.

Back in 2021, the Town had renovated the multi-use meeting room/Council Chambers, which was the first civic renovation phase, and now they are moving onto the next phase, which will be renovating an accessible administration area that will not interfere with the use of the Rec Centre.

As part of the renovations, they will include an accessibility elevator that will bring people to the Warm Room and the municipal levels of the building.

The Town of Nanton has already begun developing design-build specifications for the Rec Centre and the specifications for the new RCMP location should be ready in the next few months.

The conceptual architect's drawings will be available on the Town's website once they are available.

"Over the past eight years, the Town of Nanton Council and administration have worked closely with the Alberta RCMP and our local detachment to strengthen our relationship and ensure the delivery of policing services that meet the needs of Nanton and the surrounding area," Mayor Jennifer Handley stated in a media release. "We're pleased to see them now in a more visible and accessible location on Highway 2 and look forward to continuing our collaboration in this new chapter."
