The Morden Community Thrift Store has officially broken ground on their second building that is meant to be used for larger merchandise in the vein of furniture or appliances.
New space for big-ticket items
The sod-turning ceremony was held this past Tuesday to commemorate the start of construction for the new space, which will be built directly adjacent to the original thrift store. Kent Noel, President of the Morden Community Thrift Store, says the new building will allow the organization to better organize its expanding inventory and meet the needs of both donors and customers.
“That will be for our bigger merchandise or furniture, sporting goods, hardware, electrical,” said Noel at the ceremony. “This store here will stay with clothing and housewares, toys, jewellery, that sort of thing.”
The new building will be 8,000 square feet, compared to the original store’s 5,000. Noel shared that by moving the bulkier items to the new facility, the expansion will free up approximately 2,000 square feet in the original building.
Opening in spring
While construction is just beginning, the thrift store is aiming for a relatively quick turnaround.
“It'll probably be around March when we have a chance to get in to open,” Noel said. “That's months away, there's a lot of planning and work to be done between there. But we're hoping for March.”
The need for the expansion has been evident for a while, with the current building nearing its capacity. “We just don't have enough room in the store anymore,” Noel explained.

The right person for the job
Noel also took a moment to acknowledge the work of contractor Scott Howard, who helped simplify the process.
“I don't have that knowledge and having a contractor that can step up and do all that for you made it made it much easier for us.”
