On Tuesday, Marcia Friesen and Paulette Connery from Portage Golf Club captured the Ladies Net Division Four Ball title at the River Oaks Invitational tournament hosted by Golf Manitoba.
The two-person team event in Winnipeg invites clubs across Manitoba to send duos to compete in a four-ball format, where each player plays their own ball and the best score on each hole counts toward the team’s score.
“Our net score was 2 under par with the 71,” says Friesen. “But our gross score was actually 95. We won the net division, but we would have been second in the gross division. But you’re only allowed to win one thing.”
Friesen’s says this was about her sixth time playing in the event and the third time she has been part of a winning team.
She appreciates the opportunity to visit different courses around the province and connect with fellow women golfers.
“You get to go to different courses. You meet ladies from different places in Manitoba and you get to know them and then when you go to other tournaments, you run into them. You make friends going to different tournaments,” she says.
While Friesen enjoys the camaraderie, she admits the format adds a bit more pressure.
“You know you’ve got to be good for your team members,” Friesen remarks.
Friesen remains an avid golfer, playing a couple times a week in the Ladies League and Women’s club in Portage.
This summer she has competed in the Portage Ladies Open and plans to participate in the Neepawa Sunflower Classic scramble in September.
“It’s been a great season so far,” she adds.
