As the U15 Women’s Canadian Fast Pitch Championship comes to Morden and Winkler next week, the local business community is getting itself ready.
“We're excited to welcome these ballplayers and their families to our community,” said Clare Agnew, Executive Director of the Morden Chamber of Commerce.
She shared that hosting events like the Fast Pitch Championship can really energize the local business landscape if handled correctly.
“I think anytime that there's an opportunity like this, when there's a major sporting event in our communities, that it really gives the business community an opportunity to welcome people and to be involved with the sports community at the same time.”
Tips for getting involved
The Morden Chamber of Commerce has been encouraging local businesses to actively take part in the excitement. In a recent social media campaign, they outlined several ways for businesses to get involved.
“Maybe put a message on their highway sign welcoming the players or the spectators, you know, maybe volunteering or being an event sponsor, or even hosting some kind of a sale that has to do with the event,” Agnew suggested.
She also recommended being ready to welcome new customers into the business and having some sort of promotion around the Championship.
Agnew pointed out that restaurants, gas stations, and other service-based businesses should be prepared for higher traffic throughout the week.
“Whether it's restaurants or gas stations or anything that's a service industry, they will be busier,” she said. “So just make sure that you have proper staff and supplies and that you can promote your business that way and welcome them into your doors.”

Chamber support always available
For businesses looking to launch special promotions or events tied to the championship, the Morden Chamber is ready to lend a hand.
“We are always willing to work with our members to help promote anything that they're advertising in the community or any promotions that they're wanting to do,” Agnew said. “We would for sure help spread that word.”
