An uptick in vandalism is being noted by the Weyburn Police Service after an incident at Elk’s Park last Tuesday. The play structures were damaged by spray paint overnight and trash was strewn about the area.
Sergeant Riley Ross with the Weyburn Police Service says while they don’t have any suspects at this time, there was no lasting damage.
“The spray paint was able to be removed, so we are reminding the public that if they do see anything suspicious, to contact the police and we will investigate that.”
Sgt. Ross explains that incidents involving graffiti are becoming more widespread around the city. This is why they are asking the public to report any sightings of this behaviour.
“What we've been seeing around Weyburn is more and more mischief with graffiti. It's happening on the pathways throughout Weyburn, and then just different properties that happen to be getting tagged with graffiti.”
“If they do see something suspicious, or even somebody specifically spray painting something, contact police right away, and we'll respond and investigate as necessary.”
The matter is still under investigation. Sgt. Ross reminds that graffiti and “tagging” is a criminal offence that can result in mischief charges.
