Tatagwa Tree Day has been postponed due to inclement weather. The event will now take place on Saturday, August 16th.

Weyburn’s annual Tatagwa Tree Day is coming back this weekend, and the city’s Parks Department is inviting the community to help plant 140 trees within the Tatagwa Parkway System.

Paige Tenbult, Communications Coordinator with the City of Weyburn, says the trees planted will include multiple varieties, including spruce, poplar, buffalo berry, and Manitoba maple.

“We preach here a lot of diversity in trees so that we can experience the longevity of trees as they grow. Different trees have different growing stages and it's just wonderful to have a variety of plants that we're putting into our park system.”

The event is open to all ages and includes a barbeque lunch, treats, and giveaways for the younger participants. Those involved will get to experience the Tatagwa Parkway System firsthand while helping it flourish. This year’s planting area is the Signal Hill Walking Trail.

Tenbult explains that no experience is necessary to get involved, as city staff will be on hand to help.

“Our Parks Department already digs the holes for us, so all the participants have to do is put the tree in the hole, fill it with some clippings and soil, and just make sure that that tree is ready to start its life in the Tatagwa Trail system.”

All equipment and materials required will be provided by the city, though Tenbult does recommend bringing a few essentials.

“Bring your own lawn chairs, bring lots of water, remember to stay hydrated, and also bring gloves and hat for protection. But everything else will be supplied by the City.”

There is rain in the forecast for the event, in the event that the weather is not suitable for planting, Tenbult says that volunteers will be contacted and the event rescheduled.

“We will be posting on the City website and City social media whether or not the event is taking place on Saturday. We are able to postpone this event because it is tree planting, so we are able to move the event if needed. So just keep an eye out for that.”

Tenbult says they are looking for 50 volunteers to take part this Saturday from 9:30 a.m. to 12 p.m. Those interested must register through the City of Weyburn Xplor page. Participants will meet at the parking lot off New City Garden Road.

“If the event does get postponed and rescheduled, we'll send an email out to anybody who has registered. If there happens to be that we're not quite at that 50-participant mark or the 50 participants are unable to join on the new day, we'll put a call out for more volunteers to help us.”
