It's a big night at Rotary Republic Park here in Portage la Prairie, as two industry giants, McCain and Simplot, go head-to-head in the long-running charity soft ball game known locally as the 'Battle of the Tater Titans'. But this isn't just about bragging rights. It's about community, compassion, and a cause close to many hearts in the community, supporting Central Plains Cancer Services and their Kids Fighting Cancer programs.

Started in 2004 by Gary Bergson and Mark Morgan, the annual game has become a staple event in Portage la Prairie.

"I believe they both had family members that were struggling with cancer," said team captain Brian Crawford of Simplot. "They thought this was a way they could give back and support their families and people they knew."

The tradition has continued strong for over two decades.

This year's game carries an even deeper meaning, as both teams will take the field in memory of Scott Williams, a beloved former employee who worked at both Simplot and McCain over his career. Williams passed away earlier this year following a battle with cancer.

"Scott was an integral part of getting the Simplot plant up and running back in 2003," said Sean Ham Plant manager at Simplot. "He retired just before the expansion in 2018. He was dedicated, and a motorcycle classic car guy. It's a big loss for both companies."

To honour Williams, fans are being encouraged to bring out their classic cars and motorcycles to the game.

"We'd love them to come by," said Crawford. "Maybe between the 5th and 6th inning they can rev their engines and give a good send-off for Mr. Williams and his family, who will be at the game."

Although the game traditionally aligns with Portage's Potato Festival, which is on hiatus this year, organizers felt it was important to continue the event.

"We just thought it was an important thing to do," said Leah Gravatt of McCain. "Central Plains Cancer Services provides rides, emotional support, and so much more. The last thing you want to worry about while facing cancer is transportation or logistics."

Both companies have been busy fundraising ahead of tonight's game. Simplot staff raised money through ice cream sundae sales and raffle tickets, while McCain employees bought Big Macs for a cause and plan to host a BBQ.

"It's just part of who we are," said Marley Dewitt. "One of our slogans is ‘Be good, do good.’ Giving back is part of our purpose."

Sharilyn Knox, Executive Director of Central Plains Cancer Services, expressed her gratitude to both companies,

"We love that the employees of these two amazing organizations have fun while supporting individuals with cancer. They always make it personal. I love working with them all."

The friendly rivalry between the two potato processors remains strong, with Simplot currently on a two-year winning streak. But McCain isn't backing down.

"We're going to try and dash your hopes tonight," joked Gravett. "Hope isn't a strategy Brian," she added with a laugh, while poking some fun at Brian Crawford in responds to Simplot's modest game-day trash talk.

While the game is, at its core, a charity event, there's still plenty of playful competition and community spirit.

"It's all for fun," said Crawford. "We'll make fun of each other, have a good time, and raise some money while we're at it."

Fans are encouraged to come down to Republic Park at 6:30 p.m. on diamond 9 tonight to cheer on both teams, enter prize draws, make a donation, and support a cause that touches nearly every family in the region. Tickets will be available at the game and through participating staff members.

As Knox put it, "It's a beautiful day for the Battle of the Tater Titans."
