A long-standing local fundraiser with a global connection returns to the Cochrane Farmers’ Market this Saturday, as Saffron Collective Studios once again hosts the annual Empty Bowls event in support of the Cochrane Food Bank.
Now in its second decade, the initiative combines art and community giving. Studio members craft handmade bowls, mugs, and other pottery items throughout the year using recycled clay from classes and membership projects. This Saturday, about 150 unique pieces will be available for purchase at the market.
“All proceeds go directly to the Cochrane Food Bank,” said Jane Kluk of the Saffron Studio team. “It’s our way of contributing to those in need—helping to fill empty bowls in a meaningful way.”
The fundraiser is based on an international concept where artisans sell bowls as a reminder of global hunger, with funds supporting local food security efforts.
The event has consistently been well supported by the community. Last year’s sales raised nearly $3,000 for the food bank.
“We see lots of repeat customers every year and new ones too, especially as Cochrane continues to grow,” said Kluk.
Their booth will be highly visible and is typically located near the SLS Centre wall, right at the market entrance.
For those unable to attend, handmade pottery remains available in the studio’s gift shop, 6-205 3rd Ave W,, on weekends from noon to 4 p.m. Upcoming classes and workshops begin again in September.
