Years of hard work have paid off for a group of Cochrane athletes heading to St. John's, Newfoundland to compete in the 2025 Canada Summer Games.

Boosting more than 4,800 participants,  the opening ceremony takes place today, kicking off two weeks of competition in 19 different sports featuring athletes from all 13 provinces and territories. Team Alberta has a contingent of 484 athletes and support staff.

Cochrane's Ryan Hegarity, Elise Hagen, and Jett Hasiuk are competing in track and field. Esther Sieben is part of Alberta's athletics coaching staff.

Susanne McArthur is coaching Alberta’s mountain biking team, while Colin McArthur is providing technical support in the same discipline. Sophie Heldman is a coach with Alberta’s sailing team, and Leyton Balint is competing as a member of the women’s volleyball team.

Reese McKay is netminding for Alberta's women's box lacrosse team, and Kevin Dostie is coaching the men's box lacrosse team. Lucas Kohlman is on Alberta's men's soccer team.

Karen Dommett is serving as a member of the Alberta mission staff.

Team Alberta earned the Centennial Cup at the last Canada Summer Games, awarded to the province or territory showing the greatest improvement in final standings compared to the previous Games. Alberta also captured the award at the 2019 Canada Winter Games in Red Deer.
