Hail, heavy rain and localized flooding in parts of Airdrie on Thursday have prompted fresh safety reminders for drivers as forecasters call for the possibility of more unsettled weather and a wetter-than-normal August.

Environment Canada’s Friday morning forecast called for showers and a risk of a thunderstorm this afternoon, with 5 to 10 millimetres of rain and northwest winds gusting to 40 km/h. Thursday’s severe thunderstorm warning brought hail to parts of the city, but no hail is in the current forecast.

The Alberta Motor Association says motorists caught in hail should leave the road and park in a safe, covered area that is not likely to flood, such as a gas station with an awning, and avoid stopping in traffic lanes under bridges. If shelter isn’t available, drivers should pull off as far as possible, turn on hazard lights, remain in the vehicle, and face away from the windows until the hail passes.

For heavy rain, AMA advises turning headlights on, slowing down, leaving extra distance between vehicles, and avoiding cruise control. Drivers should steer in the tracks of the vehicle ahead, avoid braking while hydroplaning, and stay clear of moving water or standing water that reaches the bottom of vehicle doors.

AMA says anyone who feels unsafe should pull off at a safe location away from trees, utility poles, steep slopes or flood-prone low areas.
