A local animal shelter is set to hit the airwaves on Saturday morning for an annual radiothon that managed to raise over $46,800 last year.

The SPCA Swift Current's 12th annual John Meuller Memorial SPCA Radiothon kicks off as the shelter's largest fundraiser of the year, taking place from 9:00 a.m. to 3:00 p.m.

Mayor Al Bridal for the City of Swift Current shared that having a facility like the SCPA is invaluable not just to the Swift Current community but for southwest Saskatchewan.

"For our citizens to have a place that takes care of animals in our community like we do is a wonderful opportunity that's kind of a built-in Swift Current thing," he said. "I know other cities have shelters, but ours is also unique."

The SPCA Swift Current and radio station will be set up at Market Square near the Frosty Bean with adoptable pets, merchandise, sparkle tattoos, and more.

"There are other communities that don't have SPCAs, and what happens with many of those animals is they're destroyed," Bridal said. "We say destroyed, but they're killed, because no one wants them.

"I don't want to look at a future like that in Swift Current, sometimes things happen with people and they can't keep an animal, or sometimes people aren't very nice to animals, but it's not the animal's fault."

Folks interested in donating can call the shelter at (306) 773-1806, stop by the event, e-transfer to treasurer@spcaswiftcurrent.com, visit the SPCA Swift Current's website, or tune in to Country 94.1 to hear the radiothon live.
