The Town of Diamond Valley is getting a new golf course this summer.
It was announced in the spring that the Town would be getting a new 18-hole disc golf course this year.
The course is in the town-owned greenspace that runs beside the Sheep River, just south of the Field of Dreams baseball diamond along Highway 22, between the old Turner Valley and Black Diamond townsites.
Now that the course is open and ready to play, the Town is hosting a grand opening celebration on Sunday, August 17.
The grand opening will include a presentation, a free BBQ lunch, prize giveaways, and the chance to play a round at the new course.
This course was created as a result of a community-led, grassroots effort, which was made possible by volunteers and sponsors.
"A very special mention goes to Ian Penhalagan, a disc golf enthusiast, whose vision and dedication were the driving force behind this project," the Town stated in a media release. "Ian not only envisioned the course but also presented the proposal to Council, secured initial support and funding, and successfully raised the remaining funds through sponsorship. He has donated countless hours to designing and developing the course, as well as recruiting and coordinating volunteers."
The Town adds that this course would not have been possible without his leadership and commitment.
As part of developing this course, there were sponsors that helped to bring the course to life.
On top of the Foothills Lions Club donating $10,000, the Turner Valley Golf Club, Krimp Electric, Rona, PDGA Canada, Southern Alberta Law Offices, Adjunct Media Services, Valley Heating and Cooling, Alex Penney, Forge & Farm, and Country Food Mart/AG Foods were all sponsors to help create the disc golf course.
"The Diamond Valley Disc Golf Course is a shining example of what can be achieved through community spirit, volunteer dedication, and local sponsorship," said Mayor Barry Crane in the media release. "Council was proud to support this project, and we’re incredibly grateful to the individuals and organizations who gave their time, energy, and resources to bring this course to life. It’s a great addition to our community and a true grassroots success story."
The Grand Opening celebration will happen from noon to 1 p.m. at the course site.
At the event, there will be a light lunch, refreshments, a celebration, and prize givewaways, followed by open play on the course.
