Alberta Health Services has issued a water quality advisory for Cove Beach at Chestermere Lake due to elevated levels of fecal bacteria.
“Alberta Health Services is advising the public not to swim or wade at the Cove Beach area, effective immediately,” the agency stated Friday.
“Elevated levels of fecal bacteria were detected via testing of the lake water at the Cove Beach location,” AHS said. “At current levels, gastrointestinal illness may result from ingestion of the water at Cove Beach. As well, there is the possibility of skin, ear and eye infections with water contact.”
AHS said the advisory applies only to Cove Beach and does not affect other beaches on Chestermere Lake, including Anniversary Park and Sunset Park.
“As always, visitors and residents are reminded to never drink or cook with untreated water directly from any lake or reservoir, at any time,” AHS said. “Water-borne organisms, including fecal bacteria, can cause vomiting and diarrhea.”
The agency said Environmental Public Health officers will continue monitoring the water at Cove Beach.
“This advisory will remain in effect until further notice,” AHS stated.
