The Weyburn Police Service (WPS) responded to 83 calls for service in the week of July 27th to August 3rd. A total of seven charges were laid as a result, with three under the Criminal Code of Canada and four under the Traffic Safety Act.
On Monday afternoon, WPS members attended the scene of a potential structure fire alongside the Weyburn Fire Department. When they arrived, they found smoke coming from the residence. Through investigation they found that the smoke was coming from a lit cigarette disposed of in a garbage can. Firefighters helped the homeowner air out the residence.

The next day, a report of vandalism at Elk's Park was investigated by the WPS. Throughout the night, the play structures were tagged with spray paint and trash strewn around the park. This is part of an ongoing uptick in graffiti incidents around the city. The matter is still being investigated, but the WPS is asking the public to report any suspicious behaviour and remind the public that graffiti, spray painting, or "tagging" is a criminal offence and can result in mischief charges.

Fortunately, no injuries resulted. Officers located the suspect, a man from Alberta, who was arrested and charged with assault and released with a future court date.

Two road rage incidents required police mediation during the week, one on Friday and the other on Sunday. The first incident happened outside a business on Sims Avenue. The drivers both exited their vehicles to confront one another when things escalated and became physical. The second occurred behind an apartment building on the east side of the city, once again related to grievances about driving behaviour. In both incidents, police were able to mediate the situation and no charges resulted.

The week also sparked three theft investigations. One pertaining to the theft of a distinct trailer parked on Hill Avenue reported on Wednesday. The homebuilt trailer was made from the truck box of a two-tone blue, 1967 Mercury Truck. The second incident happened on Thursday, when welding cables were stolen from a work truck parked outside of a local hotel. Then on Friday, an e-bike was stolen and later recovered from a business outside of Weyburn. Investigations are still underway in all three matters.
