Airdrie's U11 All Stars Baseball team captured the Minor A Alberta/Prairie Sectional Championship over the August Long Weekend.
John Sayers, the head coach of the team, explained that this wasn't just a normal provincial tournament, as it included teams from Saskatchewan.
"The boys stepped up that weekend and played well, probably very unexpected to a lot of teams, but came away with gold."
He shared that heading into the championship weekend, the Airdrie team was ranked 6th in the league, but knocked off the first-place undefeated team from Regina in the round robin.
"They stepped up, and they weren't afraid to play any of the teams. Once we beat them (Regina), they felt unstoppable."
He explained it was important for the boys to stay composed, as any team can beat anybody in this league.
"We had 12 players on the team. All 12 kids were hitting the ball. Some of our weakest batters became our most consistent batters over the whole weekend."
Sayers explained it was amazing to see how everybody on the team stepped up and played like they did.
"They came to play and they kicked some butt."
Airdrie beat a team from the Foothills in the final, a team that knocked them out of the tournament a year ago.
