Two skaters from the Cochrane Figure Skating Club struck gold at a recent Alberta Figure Skating Foundation event.

Competing at the Wild Rose Invitational in Edmonton, Evalea Foley captured gold in the Star 8 freeskate and qualified for sectionals in pre-novice. She also finished fourth in the Star 9 short program.

Megan Lewis-Moore won gold in the Star 5 U13 freeskate.

Both skaters also earned medals at StarSkate Provincials in the spring.

It was Megan’s first time competing at the Wild Rose Invitational, and although she admitted to feeling a bit nervous, she said she’s growing more confident with every competition.

“I’ve gotten used to it since I’ve done it quite a few times now,” said the 12-year-old. “Once I get onto the ice, it just goes away and I’m focused.”

She will continue training in StarSkate when the Cochrane club returns to the ice.

Foley, who took up the sport four years ago, said she was pleased with her performance.

“I qualified for sectionals, which is good. I feel like there’s always room for improvement,” she said.

The fourteen-year-old was especially proud of the result given she suffered a knee injury two weeks before the event.

This was her second appearance at the Wild Rose Invitational, and she said her past experience helped her prepare.

“I’ve put a lot more effort on and off the ice to prepare, so I was ready for it.”

Both skaters are coached by Karen Allison, who they credit for their progress.

“She’s an amazing coach,” said Foley. “She pushes me to be better on and off the ice. I’ve definitely made a lot of progress with her. I’m not sure if I would be where I am today without her.”
