Portage Mayor Sharilyn Knox shares an update on the city’s support for wildfire evacuees arriving at the former Manitoba Developmental Centre (MDC), as part of the province’s wildfire emergency plan.
“Over the past few days, evacuees have been welcomed to site 840, the former MDC. This is part of the province's wildfire emergency plan." revealed Knox. “These new evacuees are in addition to those already placed in Portage hotels by the Red Cross.”
“This is meant to be a temporary site to help meet the urgent need for shelter,” Knox continues. “Teams are working to ensure everyone is settled, safe and supported with resources in place, from healthcare to daily essentials.”
The mayor expressed gratitude giving thanks to the collaboration of the Province of Manitoba, First Nations leadership and many dedicated staff.
“We understand how difficult it is to leave home suddenly, and we are committed to treating evacuees with compassion and respect, just as I hope the evacuees will give staff and those trying to help some grace.”
The city’s commitment to residents remains strong.
“As a city, we remain equally committed to the health, safety and Peace of Mind of our residents,” said Knox. “That means ensuring the emergency plan they have in place has firm safety protocols, clear expectations and the resources necessary to ensure our city remains both safe and welcoming.”
Portage continues working closely with the province and First Nations leadership to manage the emergency with care and respect for all.
