Portage Mayor Sharilyn Knox says many people are confusing two important terms when it comes to housing: low-income housing and affordable housing.
Clearing up this misunderstanding is vital as new housing projects are announced in the community.
What affordable housing really means
Affordable housing means that housing costs do not exceed 30 per cent of a household’s income.
“It’s often working people, teachers, nurses, tradespeople, young families who earn a steady income and may choose to rent or buy a home that’s priced in line with their wages,” explained Knox.
Rent or mortgage payments are fully covered by the tenant or owner.
In Portage la Prairie, rent for affordable housing typically range between $800 and $1,500 a month.
“In our city, that’s a lot of money, but it’s what our current market values are,” added Knox.
Low-income housing serves different needs
Low-income housing targets households earning below a set income limit.
This kind of housing often includes subsidies or additional supports, making it a key safety net.
“It’s an important safety net in our province and country for seniors, people with disabilities or families facing hard times,” noted Knox.
Why the distinction matters
When new housing developments are announced, some people assume they fall under one category when they actually belong to the other.
“Affordable housing does not mean government-assisted. It means fair-priced homes for people already living and working here,” said Knox.
She adds community needs more affordable options to support those currently living and working locally.
Housing is ultimately about people, not buildings.
“Let’s focus on facts, not rumors, so our community stays a place where everyone has a safe place to call home,” she concluded.
