With the midpoint of August nearly here and the first day of fall about six weeks away on Sept. 22, forecasts point to a mix of sunshine, occasional showers, and near- to above-normal temperatures for Airdrie and area through next week. According to Environment Canada, the normal high for this period is 22 C and the normal low is 8 C.

Environment Canada’s forecast for Monday calls for a high of 22 C with a mix of sun and cloud, dropping to 8 C overnight. Tuesday is expected to be sunny, becoming a mix of sun and cloud in the afternoon with a high of 26 C and humidex of 28. Showers are possible Wednesday, followed by clear conditions overnight and sunny skies Thursday. Highs will range from 19 to 24 C into the weekend, with a 60 per cent chance of showers Friday and a return to sun on Sunday.

The Weather Network’s forecast for Airdrie on Tuesday, Aug. 12, is mainly sunny with a high of 25 C, feeling like 28, and wind from the south at 11 km/h with gusts up to 17 km/h. The network projects a 10 per cent probability of precipitation.

For Wednesday, Aug. 13, it calls for mainly sunny conditions in the morning, then a 40 per cent chance of a shower in the afternoon with a high of 19 C. Thursday, Aug. 14, is expected to have a mix of sun and cloud with a high of 17 C and a 30 per cent probability of precipitation. Friday, Aug. 15, is forecast to reach 20 C with a 40 per cent chance of showers before weekend highs in the 22–23 C range. The Weather Network’s extended outlook through Aug. 25 shows daily highs holding near 22–24 C with mainly sunny skies.

While the short-term outlook points to near- or above-normal highs, the Old Farmer’s Almanac forecasts August temperatures in the Prairies to average 15 C, about two degrees below normal, with precipitation about 35 millimetres above average. It predicts thunderstorms and showers across the region through Aug. 13, with a few heavy thunderstorms from Aug. 14–18, and isolated showers before warmer weather later in the month.

For fall, The Old Farmer’s Almanac projects cooler-than-average conditions across the Prairies, with wet snow in higher elevations as early as October. The Farmer’s Almanac forecasts wet snow in higher elevations by mid-October, with more widespread snowfall expected across the Prairies by November, along with periods of rain and occasional warm spells in early October and mid-November.

Previous DiscoverAirdrie reporting noted Calgary recorded 177.8 millimetres of rain in July — the third-wettest July on record — while Airdrie saw significantly above-average rainfall for the month.
