The Canada Summer Games kicked off in Newfoundland Sunday afternoon, with several Saskatchewan teams competing in the various sports.
On the lacrosse floor, the women’s box lacrosse team from Saskatchewan started the games off with a big win over Prince Edward Island. Weyburn’s Ella Schenher finished with two goals, while Riceton’s Hunter Moon had a goal and an assist as Saskatchewan picked up an 8-5 victory. Maci Patterson added two assists in the win. The next game for the lacrosse team will be Monday, when they take on New Brunswick.
In men’s soccer, Team Saskatchewan opened up the games against Ontario in group play. Ontario would score two quick goals in the first ten minutes of the second half, going on to a 2-0 victory. The men’s soccer team will be back in action Monday against British Columbia.
The women’s softball team started group play Sunday against Alberta. The neighbours to the west would eke out a 1-0 victory. Saskatchewan now plays Nova Scotia, and then British Columbia, on Monday.
In Mixed Team Tennis, Saskatchewan opened up the tournament with a 5-1 win over Manitoba in group play. They will face New Brunswick on Monday.
It was a big win for Saskatchewan in men’s baseball. They would route Alberta 8-1. Saskatchewan looks to make it two wins in a row on the diamond Monday when they play Quebec.
In men’s basketball, Saskatchewan ran into a tough team from New Brunswick, falling 71-65 in group play Sunday. They will be looking to bounce back Monday when they take on Nunavut.
The women’s basketball team opened their group play with a win over Newfoundland by a final of 77-53. They, too, will be playing Nunavut on Monday.
Monday will also see Saskatchewan opening up play in beach volleyball. They play New Brunswick in the women’s tournament and Nova Scotia in the men’s tournament.
