Baseball fans in the Bridge City got their money’s worth over the weekend.
The Saskatoon Berries played in a pair of extra inning thrillers on consecutive nights at the NexGen Patch, splitting a pair of playoff games.
On Saturday, after being rained out the previous night, the Berries faced off with the Moose Jaw Miller Express in the deciding game of their best of three series.
Moose Jaw opened the scoring with three runs in the second inning before Saskatoon tied the game up in the fourth.
The Berries bats added seven runs over the fifth and sixth inning to grab what appeared to be an iron clad 10-3 heading into the seventh.
But in the top of the eighth, Moose Jaw came back with a nine-run, to move ahead 12-10. Saskatoon came back to tie the game in the bottom of the ninth to keep their season alive.
Then in the bottom of the tenth, Carnduff’s Carter Beck ended the game with a walk-off grand slam, sending the Berries into the East Final with a remarkable 16-12 win.
It was a quick turnaround, as the Berries welcomed the Regina Red Sox to Saskatoon on Sunday for another thriller to open the East Final.
The Red Sox jumped out to a 5-0 lead, but the Berries pulled back ahead after scoring four in the third inning and added three more in the fourth.
Regina tied the game with runs in the sixth and seventh, which sent the game into extra innings.
After a scoreless tenth inning, in the eleventh, Regina scored a run that proved to be a difference as Saskatoon couldn’t respond in the bottom of the inning.
Muenster’s Dallen Rude came on in relief and pitched 2.2 innings, allowing one run on three hits and recorded a strikeout.
With the victory on the road, the Red Sox can clinch the East Division tonight at Currie Field and punch their ticket into the WCBL Final.
If the Berries win tonight, then the East Final will be decided on Tuesday night in Saskatoon.
