There’s a fresh reason for tails to wag in WestLake-Gladstone. After years of wishing for a safe, open space for dogs to run, sniff, and socialize, the municipality has officially opened its first dedicated dog park, a place designed with both pets and people in mind.

The WestLake-Gladstone Bark Park, located just across from the municipal campground, features two fully fenced sections: one for small dogs and another for larger breeds. This setup, Mayor Daryl Shipman says, ensures every pooch can play at their own pace without feeling overwhelmed. And with the park open year-round, residents and visitors alike can drop by any time.

“It’s just here for them to enjoy,” Shipman says. “Our campers are already starting to use it, but we want all residents and visitors to feel welcome. Just respect the rules, pick up after your dog, keep them leashed if they’re not comfortable around other dogs, and make sure everyone stays safe.”

The idea for the park sprouted from a familiar problem in town. With no designated off-leash area, dogs were often spotted wandering the streets, trotting across private lawns, or doing their business in public spaces like the rodeo grounds and campground. The municipality looked at how nearby communities were handling the challenge and saw the benefits immediately.

“Dog parks are fantastic for keeping animals safe,” he explains. “They’re not on the streets, they’re not getting hit by cars. And for people staying at the campground, it gives them a proper place to bring their pets.”

The new facility isn’t just for locals. It could also serve as a welcome break for travellers with dogs in tow. Plans are in place for highway signage to point drivers toward the park so their furry passengers can stretch their legs mid-journey.

While the main build is finished, there are still a few final touches to come. A local family is donating a small animal shelter for the small dog area, and an additional gate will soon be added to make entering and exiting safer.

Rules are posted at the entrance, and Shipman encourages owners to give them a quick read before heading in. Along with standard etiquette like cleaning up after pets, dogs in heat should be left at home to avoid unwanted confrontations.

The mayor says the quick turnaround wouldn’t have been possible without the efforts of municipal staff.

“I just want to thank our workers for getting it up so quick,” he says. “They did a great job, and hopefully it’ll make a big difference for the community.”
