Potters of the Saffron Studio helped stock the Cochrane Food Bank through its annual Empty Bowls event on Aug. 9 at the Cochrane Farmers’ Market.

For over 10 years, the event has been held as part of a global initiative that combines art and community giving. Studio members crafted about 150 handmade bowls, mugs and other pottery items for the sale, which drew a steady crowd until closing. The event raised $2,860 for the food bank.

“All proceeds go directly to the Cochrane Food Bank,” said Jane Kluk of the Saffron Studio team. “It’s our way of contributing to those in need — helping to fill empty bowls in a meaningful way.”

“We only had 10 left at the end of the day, so we sold almost 140 pieces,” she added. “It’s great, so next year we’re going to have to make a whole lot more pottery.”

Potters of Saffron and the Cochrane Food Bank jointly operated the booth, which was front and centre at the market.

“We usually staff everything together. The food bank has been a great partner in doing that event,” Kluk said.

For those unable to attend, handmade pottery remains available in the studio’s gift shop at 6-205 3rd Ave. W. on weekends from noon to 4 p.m. Classes and workshops for adults and youth resume in September.
