It was another strong showing for Saskatchewan athletes at the Canada Summer Games in Newfoundland on Monday, with more wins coming across several sports.  

In women’s box lacrosse, Saskatchewan remains undefeated after playing a pair of games. The first game of the day was a 5-1 win over New Brunswick. Weyburn’s Ella Schenher scored a pair of goals in the win, while Riceton’s Hunter Moon added a goal and an assist. Then, in the second game of the day, a goal with 2 seconds left on the clock would give Saskatchewan a 3-3 tie against Manitoba. The round-robin will close Tuesday afternoon as Saskatchewan plays Newfoundland.  

In basketball, the men’s and women’s teams took to the floor against Nunavut. The women’s team would rout Nunavut 88-13. They will take on Yukon today. Meanwhile, the men’s team would also pick up a big win over Nunavut, winning 123-34. They will play against Yukon on Tuesday afternoon.  

Saskatchewan played two games in the men’s baseball tournament on Monday, finishing the day with a win and a loss. The win came against Quebec, taking the game by a final score of 10-5. Then, in the evening, a tough Ontario team would come away with a 10-2 win. Saskatchewan finishes out the pool play Tuesday afternoon against British Columbia.  

At Paradise Park in St. John’s, the men’s and women’s beach volleyball teams were in action. The men’s team would pick up a win over Nova Scotia, while falling to Alberta. The women’s team would get a win over Manitoba while falling to New Brunswick.  

Saskatchewan’s mixed tennis team would improve to 2-0 at the Canada Games, with a 5-1 win over New Brunswick. They finish off the round-robin on Tuesday morning against Nova Scotia. 

The women’s softball team played a pair of games on Monday. The first game was an 8-3 win over Nova Scotia. They followed it up with a game against British Columbia, which they won 3-0. Saskatchewan closes out the round-robin on Tuesday against Prince Edward Island.  

Saskatchewan’s men’s soccer team was relegated to qualification play in their tournament after their second loss Monday. They fell 3-0 to British Columbia in their final round-robin game. They will now face the third-place finisher of Group C, which will likely be Yukon, on Thursday.  

In the canoe and kayak events, there were some strong performances from the Saskatchewan athletes. Emmett Patterson finished 7th in the C-1 500m men’s race, and Kaelynn Rochefort was 7th in the women’s C-1 1000m race. Saskatchewan finished 7th in the women’s C-2 500m and 4th in the men’s C-2 1000m race. Alex Chrunik was 6th in the women’s K-1 500m and Sabe Robertson 7th in the men’s K-1 1000m. It was a 7th-place finish for Saskatchewan in the men’s K-2 500m, and a 4th-place finish in the women’s K-2 1000m.  

The rugby sevens competition got underway Monday, with the men’s and women’s teams from Saskatchewan playing three games each. The women would fall 10-7 to Manitoba and 20-5 to Quebec, before bouncing back with a 17-10 win over Prince Edward Island. They close out the round-robin on Tuesday morning against Yukon. The men would beat Manitoba 10-7, but lose 29-5 to Alberta and 36-0 to Ontario. They play New Brunswick in their final round-robin game Tuesday morning.
