Weyburn-Bengough MLA Mike Weger has been busy so far this summer, splitting his time between community events within the constituency and also representing Saskatchewan on a larger stage.
One of the highlights of Weger's summer was being back in the community and participating in local events. Talking with Discover Weyburn Tuesday morning, he mentioned he enjoyed walking the entire length of the parade route to kick off the Weyburn fair, shaking hands and handing out candy.
"That was just a really fun event that's going to be one of the highlights of my summer," Weger said. He also travelled to Bengough for a summer kickoff event, where he had what he called the tough job of judging a smoke-off competition. While there, he also spoke with residents connected to the Poplar River power plant about the province's decision to extend the life of coal-fired facilities.
On the policy front, Weger described the Midwest Legislative Conference in Saskatoon as an eye-opening experience. The event brought together legislators from ten U.S. states and four Canadian provinces to discuss shared experiences and policy-making. Weger noted that a significant outcome was showcasing the province's strengths.
"The big takeaway from that conference was that we really opened the eyes of our American colleagues to everything that Saskatchewan has," he stated, emphasizing the importance of the uranium and potash sectors.
Looking ahead, Weger is attending a caucus meeting in northern Saskatchewan. As the Legislative Secretary to the Minister of Justice, he also has a press event scheduled this week with the Prince Albert Police Service.
Closer to home, Weger shared positive updates on major infrastructure projects. He confirmed that the twinning and roundabout construction on Highway 39 northwest of Weyburn is on schedule for completion this fall. Additionally, paving work on Highway 35 north of the city is progressing nicely, and the new hospital construction continues to be a key project for the constituency.
