A Red Deer summer program is helping develop literacy skills for elementary school students.
Reading College worked with multiple students this summer who had just finished Grade 2 and were struggling with reading and writing.
Throughout July, students took part in a full-day, literacy-rich program led by three master teachers and five recent graduates from Red Deer Polytechnic’s (RDP) education program. The small-group setting ensured students received individual attention and support.
Participants also explored the RDP campus, introducing them to post-secondary opportunities. The program provided transportation and meals, making it accessible for families. Organizers say the days were packed with activities and fun, with many students calling it “the best summer ever.”
This year, students played word games such as Boggle, Swat and Snowman — a child-friendly version of Hangman. They worked in pairs, small groups and combined classes to build skills and friendships. Daily lessons focused on decoding, spelling and comprehension, with major improvements noted by the end of the four weeks.
Activity time each day offered unique experiences, from science experiments to story time with RDP’s Indigenous Student Services, including a visit to the tipi outside.
Organizers say year after year, the program leads to significant gains. Students improve reading and comprehension, print letters more clearly, use proper sentence structure and show increased imagination, excitement and confidence. Many also read more at home.
Reading College helps students begin Grade 3 at grade level, allowing them to progress alongside their peers. Parents say they are grateful for the extra support, and students are often reluctant to leave the program.
The four weeks concluded with a graduation ceremony attended by family and friends, where some in the audience shed tears watching students cross the stage.
The $100,000 program is offered at no cost to families and is funded through sponsors.
