The Town of Penhold has received a $175,000 Green Municipal Fund grant from the Federation of Canadian Municipalities (FCM). This grant will help the community canopy stretch further across parks and green spaces.
Four key sites—Critters Corner, Waskasoo Avenue, Penhold Commons, and the future Dog Park location have received 114 new trees and 142 shrubs, creating more shade, habitat, and beauty.
“This investment is about more than planting trees—it’s about planting roots for our future,” said Mayor Mike Yargeau. “Penhold is already a beautiful community, and with these new plantings, we’re making sure that beauty will only grow. I can’t wait to see these spaces flourish and transform over time.”
Tree planting began earlier this summer, with completion anticipated this fall. The expanded canopy will enhance biodiversity, improve air quality, and create inviting spaces for residents, visitors, and future generations.
To ensure these new plantings thrive, part of the grant funding will go toward the purchase of a water truck. This new equipment will support the continued healthy development of Penhold’s vegetation by making it easier to water new and existing trees and shrubs. Penhold already uses sustainable practices by capturing water from the arena and the rain catchment system at Lincoln Street Recreation to keep community green spaces flourishing—an approach that will be made even more effective with the new truck.
