Alberta’s women’s lacrosse team has punched its ticket to the quarterfinals at the Canada Summer Games and will face Manitoba tonight in St. John’s, N.L.

The team wrapped up pool play with a 4-2 record, knocking Nova Scotia and Quebec out of medal contention. Manitoba topped its pool and will have home advantage. The winner moves on to Thursday’s semifinals, while the loser plays for consolation rankings. Medal matches are Friday.

Alberta opened the tournament with a 9-4 win over Nova Scotia before falling 5-3 to British Columbia and Ontario. They closed out the round robin with a decisive 6-1 victory over Quebec.

Cochrane’s 15-year-old goalie Reese McKay has been a key part of Alberta’s run.

On the men’s side, Cochrane’s Kevin Dostie is behind the bench for Alberta’s box lacrosse team, which faced Quebec and Ontario today. They meet British Columbia tomorrow.

Alberta’s men’s soccer squad, with Cochrane’s Lucas Kohlman, is off to a hot start at 2-0, outscoring opponents 11-0 with wins over P.E.I. and the Yukon.

Cochrane-area athletes are also making their mark in other sports. Ryan Hegarity, Elise Hagen and Jett Hasiuk are competing in track and field with coach Esther Sieben. Susanne and Colin McArthur are part of the mountain biking team, Sophie Heldman is coaching Alberta’s sailing team, and Leyton Balint is with the women’s volleyball team.

On Monday night, Games officials shifted several events, including lacrosse, as a precaution due to a wildfire burning near Paradise and Conception Bay South, just outside St. John’s. Soccer was also moved and beach volleyball was postponed.
