The Sylvan Lake Gulls will hold home-field advantage in the Western Canadian Baseball League championship series after the Regina Red Sox pulled off a semifinal upset Tuesday night.
Regina downed the top-ranked Saskatoon Berries 6-2 in Game 3 of their best-of-three series, winning both contests on the road. The Berries had dominated the regular season, posting a franchise-best 46-9 record.
With the win, the Gulls, who swept the three-time defending champion Okotoks Dawgs in their semifinal, get home-field advantage in the best-of-three final, another first for the club. But because of the long travel distance between Sylvan Lake and Regina, the two teams agreed to open the best-of-three series in Regina on Thursday night.
Game 2 will be played in Sylvan Lake on Friday at 7:05 p.m., with a deciding Game 3, if necessary, set for Saturday at home, also at 7:05 p.m.
Cochrane’s Simon Baker has been one of the Gulls’ playoff standouts, highlighted by a grand slam in the semifinal series against Okotoks.
