Athletes from the Weyburn area were instrumental in leading Team Saskatchewan's women's box lacrosse team to a 10-1 victory over Newfoundland and Labrador on Tuesday at the Canada Summer Games.
Weyburn's Ella Schenher and Maci Patterson, alongside Hunter Moon of Riceton, had a hand in nearly half of the team's ten goals. The trio combined for four goals and five assists in the dominant performance.
Moon opened the scoring for Saskatchewan in the first period, with Patterson picking up the assist. Moon would add another goal in the third period and later assist on one of Schenher's goals. Schenher found the back of the net twice in the third period, with assists from Patterson on the first goal and Moon on the second. Patterson finished the game with two assists.
Saskatchewan will now face Ontario in the quarterfinals.

Saskatchewan will finish either first or second in pool play in the women’s basketball tournament at the Canada Games. They topped Yukon 98-16 on Tuesday. Sitting at 3-0 so far, they will face Manitoba, which is also undefeated, in their final round-robin game on Wednesday morning.
In men’s basketball, Saskatchewan picked up a 94-64 win over Yukon. They close out the round-robin against Nova Scotia on Wednesday morning, with the winner getting 2nd place in the group.

The round-robin wrapped up in the men’s baseball tournament on Tuesday, with Saskatchewan finishing with a 2-2 record. They fell 2-0 to British Columbia in their final game of the stage. They now face Quebec in a qualification game on Wednesday morning, with the winner moving on to the quarterfinals.

Saskatchewan was handed its first loss in the mixed team tennis tournament Tuesday, falling 4-2 to Nova Scotia. They will now play Nunavut in a qualification game on Wednesday morning, with the winner advancing to the quarterfinals on Thursday.

It was a big win for Saskatchewan’s women’s softball team as they finished out their round-robin. They handed Prince Edward Island an 11-4 loss. Saskatchewan will now play Nova Scotia or Quebec in a qualification game tonight.

The first medal of the games for Saskatchewan came on the water. Baer Robertson won a bronze in the men’s C-1 1000m canoe race. Then, Leo Zhang won the first gold medal for Saskatchewan, winning the 100m (s6-14) para men’s backstroke.
