On Thursday, August 14th, DiscoverWeyburn, Magic 103, Country 106.7, and AM1190 will be teaming up with the City of Weyburn and our amazing sponsor partners for the Great Plains Taste of Summer Charity BBQ.

This week, the proceeds of the event will be going to the Weyburn Humane Society. The Humane Society operates the only animal shelter in Weyburn, which helps with stray animals and offers adoptions. However, they are a non-profit organization and receive no funds from the provincial or federal levels.

“We do receive some financial help from the City of Weyburn with the animal control contract, but our operating costs vary from month to month,” said board president Beverly Paul. “One of our biggest expenses is veterinary costs and, of course, food. We do get lots of donations in the form of dog and cat food, but we go through this quickly, and sometimes there are special diets that our animals need to be on. We also go through lots of cat litter.”

She noted that most of the fundraising that happens with the Weyburn Humane Society goes to their operating fund.

“Most of the time, our main goal for raising funds is to keep the shelter operating,” she said. “So this will go into our operating account just to be used for whatever we need. I strongly feel that we’re very fortunate to be in a community that cares so much for all the homeless animals that come into our care. The shelter would not be able to function without their support in the form of donations of money, food, and volunteering.”

Paul noted that, along with donations, they are also always looking for volunteers and board members.

“We haven’t had a full board for probably two years, but the ones we do have, they’re very dedicated,” she said. “Being on the board, you are a working member, you’re helping with fundraising and possibly taking on an executive position.”

The Great Plains Taste of Summer Charity BBQ in support of the Weyburn Humane Society is scheduled for Thursday, August 14th, at Memorial Park next to City Hall. We will be there from 11:30 until 1:30 (or we sell out), selling hot dogs, chips, and a drink for $3 with all proceeds going directly to the Humane Society at the end of the event.
