Visitors to Kananaskis Country and the Bow Valley should be aware of increased bear activity, as Alberta Parks has issued a bear advisory effective August 12, 2025, until further notice. The surge in sightings comes amid an exceptional berry crop, drawing both black bears and grizzly bears into day-use areas, campgrounds, trails, and along roadways.
Officials warn that bears may be less likely to move away from food sources and encourage visitors to remain vigilant.
Signs to watch for include berries and bear scat. If you encounter a bear, stop, speak calmly, and slowly leave the area, giving the animal plenty of space.
