Pool fun in Ponoka will pause Aug. 25 as the Aquaplex closes for annual maintenance and improvements, with reopening expected in early October.

The work includes a full renovation of the changerooms with new flooring, tiles, fixtures, vanities and paint; installation of a new water filtration system; and deep cleaning of all pools, the sauna and pool deck. Painting will also be done throughout the facility.

“The upgrades and renovations to the changerooms and pool filters are part of the town’s annual proactive maintenance program at the Aquaplex to continually modernize and refresh the facility and ensure smooth operation throughout the year,” said Andrew Jones, Ponoka’s manager of parks, recreation and facilities.

Jones said the town has made significant upgrades to the Aquaplex over the past five years, including resurfacing the pool deck, installing a new rooftop HVAC system, upgrading the sauna and renovating the multi-purpose room.

He noted late August and September are typically slower at the Aquaplex, with many people still on holidays or adjusting to the return of school, which is why the work is scheduled now.

Even with the closure, residents can still attend other pool facilities.

Aquaplex passes will be honoured at the Manluk Centre in Wetaskiwin and the Kinsmen Aquatic Centre in Lacombe during the shutdown.
