Moose Jaw athletes have advanced to the playoff rounds in women’s box lacrosse and women’s softball at the Canada Summer Games in St. John’s, N.L.
On Tuesday, Saskatchewan’s women’s softball team picked up an 11-4 win over P.E.I. Moose Jaw’s Blake Maltais played right field and went two-for-four at the plate with four runs batted in.
Team Saskatchewan finished the round robin with a 2-2 record and moves into the qualification round. They will face the winner of Nova Scotia versus Quebec on Wednesday.
In women’s box lacrosse, Saskatchewan defeated the host team from Newfoundland 10-1. Moose Jaw’s Kyler Pladson is part of Saskatchewan’s roster.
Saskatchewan finished the round robin with a record of 3-0-1, tying Manitoba for first place in Pool B. They will meet Ontario in the quarterfinal on Wednesday.
Team Saskatchewan picked up its first medal of the Games yesterday in the pool. Leo Zheng of Regina won gold in the 100-metre backstroke para-swimming event. Zheng, 18, swims for the Moose Jaw Flying Fins and is competing in his second Canada Summer Games.
Also back in action on Wednesday, Moose Jaw’s Marcus Capili will compete in the cycling road race.
