The Southeast Saskatchewan Martial Arts Summit is coming to the Nicholson Centre on Aug. 23, bringing together seven local clubs to showcase martial arts in the region.

The summit runs from 9 a.m. to 6:30 p.m. The $40 registration fee includes all presentations, food throughout the day, a catered lunch, and a small dinner buffet.

The day will feature seven one-hour seminars designed to introduce local clubs to each other and to anyone interested in learning about martial arts. “They will show you what their clubs are about, their philosophy, and provide an introduction to their styles,” said Robert Blowatt, Sensi at Genki Martial Arts in Frobisher. “People are like, ‘OK, what’s it about? I’m interested in doing martial arts, but there isn’t a platform for that.’ This gives them that opportunity.”

Blowatt said the summit is not just for experienced martial artists. “I just love learning about it. I’m going to be participating too. Understanding the styles and their histories, and talking with other instructors, is such a great learning environment,” he said. “It’s an endless pool of information. There is no end.”

He hopes the event will grow in the future. “This is just scratching the surface. If it’s successful this year, I hope to expand on it,” he said.
