The Gecko Band’s stated mission at its inception in 2000 was straightforward – to create a band that would deliver authentic, no-holds-barred rock music with heart, soul, and the kind of energy that connects instantly with audiences. The band from Puerto Vallarta, Mexico has taken that mission and cultivated an incredibly loyal following in Western Canada.

The Gecko Band has played throughout the region, one of their favourite haunts being the Kuroki Community Hall. But for the first time, the band sets foot inside the fabled Danceland in Manitou Beach, and they couldn’t be more excited. Their audience this Friday night at 8:00 pm will be as well.

Founded by lead vocalist Victor, Vera the Gecko Band quickly made the acquaintance of virtually every western Canadian vacationer who landed in Puerto Vallarta looking for a party atmosphere. Their classic rock and country orientation found thirsty ears almost immediately. The Rolling Stones, Johnny Cash, Tom Petty, The Bellamy Brothers were among their staples.

As the musicians got to commune with Canadian fans, they uncovered a whole new catalog of artists and tunes that endeared them even more to the band. Songs by The Tragically Hip, Loverboy, Bryan Adams and prairie based bands like Streetheart and the Deep South became part of their musical fold.

Currently en route from Alberta after a performance in Medicine Hat, lead vocalist and band spokesman Victor Vera says the band is thrilled to finally play at the iconic prairie venue.

"We are very, very excited about it," Vera said in our interview. "That’s one of the places I was very excited about performing at. It’s a place we’ve always wanted to play."

The four piece high-energy ensemble has evolved their reputation built through years of summer touring. The connection began organically, Vera explained.

"About 90% of our followers in Mexico are Canadian," he said. "In 2017, we started doing summer tours in Canada because many of our Canadian friends invited us to play here. That’s how it all started."

Since then, the band has toured extensively, bringing their signature mix of Latin flair and classic rock covers to provinces like British Columbia, Alberta, Saskatchewan, and Manitoba.

But it’s not just the music that draws crowds – it's the Gecko Band’s contagious live energy.

"We drive a lot. Sometimes we arrive just in time to set up, do a fast sound check, and start the show," Vera said. "But the most tiring part is probably the partying after the gigs! Our energy on stage is contagious, and people want to party with us. We can't say no.”

To top it all off, there’s a universal appeal to the band and their special brand of rock, pop and soul.

We play music for all ages. It’s a very good combination of tune – some Canadian, some not – but all ones Canadian audiences love.”

The band has also begun branching out into original material. Their first full length album, Whiskey and Wheels, features four original songs, including Relaxing Day, penned by Vera’s wife, Rosie Vera.

"Yes, absolutely, we’ll be playing some of the originals at Danceland," Vera confirmed. "We’re proud of what we’ve created."

With its legendary horsehair dance floor and storied history, Danceland represents a milestone for many artists. For the Gecko Band, it’s the culmination of years spent building bonds across borders.

"We’re surrounded by Canadians most of the year," Vera said with a laugh. "You come to see us in Puerto Vallarta in winter, and now we’re here in your summer. It’s a beautiful exchange. We enjoy every second of it."
