Airdrie RCMP are reminding residents to take precautions against scams when buying items online or in person.
Jessica Hawkins, the acting corporal for the community unit in Airdrie, explained that while reports to the RCMP of getting scammed are rare, that does not mean it does not happen. She explained that it is important to trust your gut feeling.
"We've had some situations where somebody wants to meet in an alley or behind a store, where they're kind of hidden and out of the public eye. Then it leads to fake products, or whatever other reasons they're bringing you there. Those are big indicators that it is not legit."
She explained that if you are trying to find a good spot with somebody to buy something, the RCMP Detachment is a great place.
"Just at the front parking lot to do those exchanges is a great spot."
She also shared that having somebody else with you is a great idea as well.
"I've had that plenty of times in my personal life. Just have someone there with you wherever you're meeting, that way it's known that you're not just alone."
Hawkins also shared that if somebody randomly approaches you to buy something, it is important to say no and leave.
"They're trying to pressure you to do something that's not right. Just getting away from that situation and calling us if necessary is important."
She emphasized the importance of reporting any scams to the RCMP, as they will do their best to assist.
