Saskatchewan’s construction sector and economy are booming, with building permits up 34.7 per cent over the past year and the province’s GDP reaching a record $80.5 billion, according to Statistics Canada.

The province ranked second among all provinces for year-over-year growth.

“As our economy grows and more people choose to live, work and raise a family in Saskatchewan, our construction sector will continue to see strong gains,” Trade and Export Development Minister Warren Kaeding said. “Today’s numbers demonstrate that our government’s commitment to creating opportunities for our residents and ensuring all industries achieve success is paying off.”

Month-to-month building permits also rose 13.4 per cent from May 2025 to June 2025.

The total value of building permits reflects the dollar value of permits issued for residential and non-residential construction and is an important indicator of demand for raw materials and labour.

In Estevan, the July 2025 building permit report shows four permits were issued: one for a single-family home and three categorized as miscellaneous. That is down from six permits issued in June. The total value of permits so far this year is $4,919,588.

Statistics Canada’s latest GDP figures show Saskatchewan’s real GDP increased by $2.6 billion, or 3.4 per cent, in 2024, reaching an all-time high of $80.5 billion. The province’s growth ranked second in the country and was well above the national average of 1.6 per cent.

Private capital investment in Saskatchewan rose 17.3 per cent last year to $14.7 billion, the highest among provinces. Investment is projected to reach $16.2 billion in 2025, a 10.1 per cent increase over 2024, ranking second among provinces for anticipated growth.
