The Lacombe Legion has closed its basement after a plumbing problem that caused significant flooding was discovered early Tuesday.
Water about a foot deep covered the kitchen, poppy room and office and is believed to have been there for at least a day.
Legion president Kathy Hobbs said the cleanup wouldn’t have been possible without dedicated volunteers, who were there since 10 a.m.
“They took over 100 buckets full of water out while I was here just mopping the floor,” she said. “They had shop vacs and then other volunteers came in with big blowers to dry up. It’s very damp and humid down there right now.”
The flooding has forced the cancellation of events including darts, drop-in pool and coffee time, and all basement rentals.
Hobbs said repairs could take a couple of months as the flooring, wallboards and office will need to be replaced.
The upstairs and lounge remain open, and donations are being accepted for the Lacombe Legion’s candlelight vigil at Fairview Cemetery in September.
